I have had one hell of a week. Over the weekend, Ruben had a bump appear on his neck. Looked like a pimple, or a bug bite that had a bit of puss on the top. He popped it, and seemed ok. It was red and irritated, but nothing out of the ordinary for the spot it was in. Then Tuesday morning we sat around, had some lunch, and were watching a movie when things started to go downhill. When we laid down for bed for him, he was all twitchy (that's the best word for it) and had a very hard time laying down. And his lower back was hurting really bad. He had a mild fever of 100.5 or so, and just felt blah. About an hour later he woke up and had to throw up. His fever was 101.7, and his color was gone. His lymph node in the right side of his neck was literally swelling before my eyes, and i could see the fever and pain building in his face. I asked him if he thought we needed to go to the doc that night, and he said he didn't think so, that it was probably the stomach flu.
Well, needless to say it wasn't the stomach flu. He woke up a few more times during the night, threw up everything on his stomach, and was in extreame pain in his back. His lymph node had become like a golfball had been shoved in his neck, and the spot on his neck had started to seep green shit. It was nasty. His ever spiked, hitting as hith as 103.7 before it was through. He had an extreamely difficult time holding anything down, and FINALLY in the morning was able to keep down some pain medicine. That brought his fever down to a more managable level. Then i went ahead and took him. Basicially, i just forced him to get in the car and go as soon as i got back from taking Ivy to school.
When we got up there, they pretty much rushed him through after triage because of how bad his symptoms were. The doctor there (Dr. Dillanger - That man is an amazing doctor) looked at him, felt his neck, looked at his spot on his neck, and ordered some tests to be run. He knew he was sick. He could tell. But just how sick was a surprise even to him. The results came back to the shock of everyone way higher than was expected. A normal infection (like an ear infection for example) rarely has a white blood cell count of more than 10,000-15,000. Ruben's was over 30,000! That alone said that there was something super serious going on, and they needed to find out what was going. The medicine and IV fluids seemed to help a bit, but not nearly enough or fast enough. Ruben was tachicardic (sp?) meaning his heart was racing, and his fever was back. All of that combined brought him to the conclusion that he needed to stay overnight to get a good kick in the butt for whatever it was.
They didn't officially have a room upstairs for him last night. They had to just put him in one of the ER rooms and wait until one came open. It wasn't until about 2:30 that he got his room. He called to let me know. Then he was told by the few doctors that kept coming in that they still don't know for sure what's wrong, they can't find the source of infection, and until they do all they can give him are IV wide-spectrum antibiotics and wait for test results. They also made it pretty clear that he was probably going to have to stay another night because they don't know and don't want him to get worse. He was pissed off, understandably, because he's NEVER been that sick or had to stay overnight in the hospital. I was honestly afraid he was going to just leave and refuse anymore treatment, and end up getting way worse and havign to go to a different hospital and be treated there. OU is the best hospital for him, and i explained that even though it SUCKS tha the's got to stay there, that it's the best option. That they would find out what was wrong, and if he went home and got worse they'd have to start all over. So he settled and accepted the fact. And it was easier on him when he found a babysitter that would watch the girls for us and i could stay up there with him.
They are gonna watch the girls here at our apartment. I need to get a fire under my ass and get it clean. Ther'es still a lot to be done. But i needed to get this out of my head first. I think i forget sometimes how much support we've got. I've had a ton of friends sending well wishes and good thoughts and prayers our way. Have a few friends sending us money to help out becaues Ruben had to miss three nights of work, and we just can't afford that, and even his boss is willing to work with him and get him another day or somethign to help make at least one of them up. It can feel so lonely up here, because everyone is so spread out and don't get to see each other much, but something like this brings them back in view. And i'm thankful for that. I can't even begin to put into words how thankful i am for everyone right now
Neway time to clean, then take the girls up to show daddy their costumes, then bring them home and make sure i've got everythign in eed for the ngith, and then go back and spend the night in the room with him. Not looking forward to the hospital room, but totally looking forward to spending the night with him :)
